We had a few moments of reflection on this summer's Olympic games. Almost all the students had seen parts of them with their families. Then, we talked about when they first began in 776 BC. We showed pictures from books of the Early Greeks and talked about how the games at that time were only for men. We showed a book that depicts highlights of all the games beginning over a hundred years ago in Athens, Greece and talked about the tradition of the torch. Some of the 5th and 6th graders remember when the torch runners came through Draper for the 2002 winter games. We also read a listing of all the different games in the summer Olympics (We got this online). It was fun to see a show of hands for students who saw each of them.
