Sprucewood Sept 07

School: Sprucewood Elementary
Month/Year: September 2007

Recommended Read-a-loud or Book-talk books:

Title: “Pajama Day”
Author: Lynn Plourde
Topic: Pajama Day and Forgetting things
Grades: 1-4

Comments: This is a darling book about Drew A. Blank and how he forgets pajama day, his teddy bear, his pillow, and his breakfast snack even though he has tied strings around his finger and put sticky notes everywhere. The kids loved this book and the clever ending made it even more enjoyable for them. We read it before Red Ribbon week and tied into not forgetting about the red ribbon activities, i.e. slipper day.

Title: “Roald Dahl”
Author: Jill C. Wheeler
Topic: Roald Dahl
Grades: 4-6

Comments: We shared the biography on Roald Dahl written by Jill C. Wheeler. The book tells about the author and how he came up with some of his imaginative stories lines such as “The Witches”. It also told of how all of his stories started with a line or two written in an old tatter school notebook. Whenever he had an idea, he would write it down so he didn’t forget and then develop the story later. One story even began as a single word, written in the dust on his car. Most of the students were familiar with Roald Dahl and his books and enjoyed learning more about him. We also shared “James and the Giant Peach” with the students.
