School: Altara Month/Year: September 2007
Recommended Read-a-loud or Book-talk books:
Title: Big Al and Shrimpy Author: Andrew Clements
Topic: Everyone has strengths and weaknesses
Grades: Kindergarten
Comments: We talked about the importance of being a friend to everyone. It doesn’t matter if we’re big like Al or small like Shrimpy, we all have strengths and weaknesses.
Title: Princess Penelope’s Parrot Author: Helen Lester
Topic: Speak kind words to others. You never know who is listening or learning from you.
Grades: K - 3
Comments: Penelope is a spoiled little girl who gets everything she wants. She gets a parrot for her birthday and wants him to speak to her. She tries everything to get him to speak and treats him very badly by saying rude and terrible things to him. One day a Prince comes by to see Penelope. She has wanted to marry him for ever. Well, she puts the parrot behind a curtain so the Prince won’t see him. The parrot proceeds to speak the terrible words he has learned from Penelope and the Prince thinks it’s Penelope talking. The Prince leaves as quickly as he can, leaving Penelope behind. Later the parrot joins the prince and they enjoy the seaside together without the spoiled Princess.
Pair and Share Topic: Amazing Survival Stories
Grades: 4 - 6
Titles/Authors used: “The World’s Most Amazing Survival Stories by Tim O’Shei, Basher Five –Two by Scott O’Grady
Comments: We picked out several of the stories in the 1st book to share with the kids. One of the stories was about Scott O’Grady. We then paired this book with a biography of Scott O’Grady and read about some of the experiences he had while waiting to be rescued out of Bosnia. He was an F-16 Fighter Pilot who’s plane was shot down over Bosnia.
