"Are You A Horse?"  by Andy Rash (April Report)

Ray is a clueless cowboy who is given a saddle for his birthday.
It came with these instructions:
1. Find a horse
2. Enjoy the ride!
He is so excited to try it out, but he has one problem - he doesn't know what a horse is.
The story describes his adventures in trying to find "a horse".
He encounters objects, plants and several animals, asking each time "Are you a horse?"

To incorporate the Dewey System, we displayed books about all the things he saw in his search.
The children could see that even an easy reading book could encourage them to study real things.
The books we chose were:
cacti - "Life in the Desert" by Lucy Baker
snakes - "Snakes" by Gail Gibbons
crabs - "Crabs" by Jen Green
chameleons - "What Color is Camouflage?" by Carolyn Otto
owls - "Owls" by Elin Kelsey
pigs - "Farm" by Ned Halley
sloths - "Strange Creatures that Really Lived" by Millicent Selsam
lions - "Lions" by Susan Schafer
zebras - "Zebras" by Sandra Markle
horses - "Handsome Horses" by Anders Hanson
cowboys - "Cowboy - an Album" by Linda Granfield

Does Ray ever find a real horse and get to use his new saddle?
This book is enjoyable reading, with a funny ending.
The kids loved this story.
