We explain that stories can be told without using any words. We show several examples and talk about the use of perspective, detail and surprise in the telling of stories with pictures. We hook the kids by showing only parts of these stories and never the end as many of these books have a surprise ending. David Wiesner has written several of these books and in fact has won the Caldecott award three times! Our favorite wordless books are Zoom by Banyai and Flotsam by Wiesner. We save these for last and, of course don’t reveal the endings. This book talk works for 2nd – 6th graders. A listing of books in our collection can be seen by typing “without words” into the search field and clicking Keyword.

Short Cut
Two-time winner of the Caldecott Medal. David Macaulay is a master of details in his books about the construction and workings of numerous gadgets and machines. Born in England and raised in New Jersey, he is well known for his architectural drawings of castles, a Roman city, Pyramids and Cathedrals but we most enjoyed showing his unusual stories in the Sci-fi book Motel of the Mysteries and the playful way he combines many stories into one with the books Black and White and Shortcut.
