Titles/Authors used: “Helen Keller” by George Sullivan, “Out of Darkness” the story of Louis Braille by Russell Freedman, and “Handtalk School” by Marybeth Miller.

Comments: We asked the children to close their eyes and plug their ears for a minute. We explained that Helen Keller lived her life that way. We selected different parts of the book to read to the kids that gave an overview of her life and the amazing person she was. We showed them a chart of the Alphabet in Sign Language and had them practice a few letters. We shared the book, “Out of Darkness” and showed them a chart of the Braille Alphabet that Louis Braille invented. We then shared the book, “Handtalk School” and showed them a few pictures in the book of signs for different words. The kids really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
