Sprucewood - November

School: Sprucewood Elementary
Month/Year: November 2007

Recommended Read-a-loud or Book-talk books:

Title: I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Pie
Author: Alison Jackson
Topic: Thanksgiving
Grades: All

Comments: This is a clever, rhyming story about an old lady that is invited for Thanksgiving Dinner. Upon arrival she eats the whole pie she has brought for dinner and then drinks a jug of cider to moisten it inside her. Then she grows bigger and bigger as she consumes the whole Thanksgiving dinner. In the end she joins a holiday parade as a big balloon. The kids loved the story and even started to help me tell it as it repeated itself.

Title: Fancy Nancy
Author: Jane O’Connor
Topic:Family Life, Humorous, Clothing
Grades: 1-4

Comments: This is a story of a little girl who wants everything to be fancy, including her family, dolls and pets. She gives her family lessons in being fancy, dresses them up in fancy clothing & accessories, then they all go out for a fancy dinner. A disaster occurs during the dinner and she doesn’t feel so fancy anymore. A delightful story and the kids really liked it. We followed it up the next week with Fancy Nancy & The Posh Puppy.

Pair and Share Topic: Elections
Grades: All

Titles/Authors used: Voting & Elections – “New True” book by Dennis B. Fradin
Duck For President - Doreen Cronin
My Teacher For President – Kay Winters

Comments: We discussed what voting is and it’s origin, then told simple stories. The kids seemed to enjoy the discussion.
